Allergy Treatment-Frequenty Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the treatment work? AAT addresses the symptoms associated with allergies and sensitivities by reducing the biological stress caused by the offending substance. Gentle pressure is used to stimulate points on the back, which correspond with the major organ systems. According to traditional acupuncture theory, this stimulation relaxes the body and temporarily strengthens each of the major organ systems. During treatment, a subtle representation of the substance is introduced to the surface of the skin. Acupressure stimulation is then applied to reduce the stress load caused by the substance. The body associates the enhanced state with the substance, allowing for a more appropriate response.

How soon will I see results? Our primary goal is to get results for the patients as soon as possible. Many patients will get some results immediately or within the first few treatments. However, it is not always possible to predict results and additional treatments may be required before experiencing improvement. For example, if a patient is reacting to four substances, all four substances may need to be treated before results are seen. This is due to the fact that all of the four substances may be contributing to the overall symptoms and all substances may need to be addressed before the symptoms are resolved. We strive to get your symptoms resolved in as few treatments as possible.

What are the most common symptoms treated in the clinic? Bloating, cramping, reflux, heartburn, gas, diarrhea, nausea, runny nose, sneezing, congestion, post-nasal drip, itchy watery eyes, coughs, wheezing, shortness of breath, red, scaly or itchy rashes, blisters with oozing and crusting, dry leathery skin areas, hives, itchy skin, hyperactivity, mood swings, headaches, fatigue, tiredness, chemical sensitivities, reactions to the sun, any negative reaction to harmless substances.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of sessions required depends on the number of items causing a reaction.  For example, a patient who reacts to five families of substances (dairy, wheat, corn, animal dander and pollen) may require between 5 to 12 sessions to relieve the symptoms or resolve a condition.

Is there an age restriction for the treatments? No. We can treat any age, including infants.

How long do I have to wait before I can have contact with the items that were treated in my session?

Following a session, a patient should avoid the substance that was treated for 2 hours, if possible. Depending on the item addressed, avoidance is not always possible. It is recommended that the patient not have excessive contact with the item until the following day.

How much does it cost? The Initial Session is $150, which includes an allergy assessment and a treatment for one allergen family. Follow-Up treatments are $100, which includes the treatment of one allergen family. If you are an existing SSA patient, all AAT treatments are the price of a follow up ($100).

Can I get multiple items treated in one session? No. We are only able to treat one allergen family per session. For example, grass and dairy are two different allergen families and cannot be treated in one session. However, multiple species of grasses can be included in one treatment as they are all within the same allergen family.

Can I have more than one session in a day? Yes. Two sessions can be completed in one day. However, there must be at least 2 hours between sessions. This is a great option for people who want to quickly reduce the symptoms associated with an allergy or sensitivity or for patients who have to drive some distance to get to the clinic.

How long are the treatments? The Initial Session takes 30 minutes and includes an assessment and one treatment.
Follow-Up Sessions take 20 minutes and includes one treatment.

Are there any guarantees that my symptoms will be relieved?
Unfortunately, we can offer no guarantees; however, the majority of our patients respond favorably to the AAT treatment on a long-term basis. We cannot guarantee that new symptoms will not develop in the future.

Do you take health insurance for the treatments? No. We do not take health insurance.

How do I make an appointment? You can make an appointment by calling the clinic directly at 347.886.9695 (NYC) or 914.261.1495 (Nyack) or you can email us at info@sacredspaceacupuncture.com.  You do not need a doctor’s referral.

Do I need to do anything before my appointment? Please download the appropriate intake forms and fill out prior to the appointment time. Please arrive a bit earlier than your treatment time is scheduled.

Do not smoke or wear perfume or fragrances prior to coming in to the clinic. This is a courtesy to our other patients who may be sensitive to those scents.

Please wear clothing to the appointment that covers the entire back.

Patients with previous allergy tests from medical doctors are encouraged to bring a copy of those tests to their Initial Session.

Pharmaceutical and over the counter medications will NOT effect the treatment.

Patients who have other therapies (massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, etc) scheduled on the same day as the AAT treatment should schedule those therapies PRIOR to the AAT treatment.

Do not eat for 2 hours after the treatment, if being treated for food items.

If experiencing an acute stage of illness including an elevated temperature, the patient should contact the clinic to reschedule the appointment.

Please be prompt. A late arrival will not allow for a full treatment session and will affect the schedule for the patients that follow. If late for an appointment, the clinic will attempt to reschedule a session for later in the day. If later appointment times are not available, the session may need to be rescheduled for another day and a missed session fee will be charged. The missed session fee is $55 and will be collected at the time of the next appointment.

Sacred Space Acupuncture has a 24-hour cancellation policy. If a patient must cancel an appointment, it should be done no later than 24 hours prior to the appointment; otherwise a cancellation fee will be charged. The cancellation fee is the price of a full follow up visit $100 and will be collected at the time of the next appointment.

Treatments are not administered on women in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Sacred Space Acupuncture DOES NOT treat anaphylactic conditions or any life threatening conditions.

Do I need to stop taking any of my medications before the treatment? No. Do NOT stop taking medication that has been prescribed by your medical doctor without his/her authorization. If you are taking over the counter medication to control your current symptoms, it is fine to continue taking them. Medication will NOT effect the treatment.

Are any traditional medical allergy tests offered in the clinic? No. We do not offer any allopathic allergy testing, so neither skin prick tests nor RAST tests are available at Sacred Space Acupuncture. AAT is not a medical treatment and practitioners do not diagnose. However, we do utilize medical allergy tests during the assessment, when provided by patients from their doctors.

What qualification do the practitioners have? All practitioners at Sacred Space Acupuncture are fully credentialed acupuncturists. They also receive extensive training in the AAT technology to ensure the most accurate treatment possible.

What is the difference between an Allergy and a Sensitivity? A true allergy is defined as a substance that requires an IgE mediated response within the body and is estimated to affect less than 2% of adults and 4-8% of children and infants. A sensitivity, which is much more common, does not require an IgE mediated response. An allergy and sensitivity can both produce similar symptoms within the body. We can address the symptoms associated with allergies and sensitivities, as they are both due to an inappropriate reaction within the body.

Can an intolerance be treated? No. An intolerance, which is different from an allergy or sensitivity, is caused by a deficiency within the body, typically an enzyme. Intolerance is not due to an inappropriate reaction to a substance that can be corrected. For example, with lactose intolerance, the lactase enzyme is missing in the body, which breaks down the lactose. Because this enzyme is missing, the lactose cannot be tolerated in the system and symptoms will be present.

Can you treat for anaphylactic conditions?

No. We do not treat conditions involving anaphylactic reactions. However, patients with an anaphylactic reaction may be treated for other sensitivities that are not life threatening.
